Originally introduced as part of the 80 Series consoles in the 1970s, these colorful preamps are known for their fat, warm sound and rich low end. There are certainly pristine plugin options out there. YYMV of course, and it's great to have options. I just know it all sounds good and I would have to work a lot harder with EQ or other tricks to get even close to the same results. This may sound snarky, but I guess if you're making an album of "test tone's greatest hits" then this would matter. It's only the ones above Nyquist that do. A partial below Nyquist does not create aliasing. Keep in mind that this alias is the foldback of a higher frequency partial (with lower amplitude), not the one at -55db. If you switch to LINE mode, slide the frequency up and down between 3k and 8k and you'll see zero attenuation.Īlso, you said "the highest partial below Nyquist is ~-55dB, and the aliasing level is well below ~-85dB. Either try it yourself or you'll have to trust me that the marked partials are indeed aliasing at -76db. Same settings as yours, just on a higher fundamental. That said, we need to keep in mind that we're feeding it LINE levels while in MIC mode, so with your settings we're clipping heavily. With these settings aliasing is clearly audible, peaking at around -50db. I could not detect any anti-aliasing in LINE mode as the foldback is perfectly mirrored. Using your settings I noticed there is some anti-aliasing in place IF in MIC mode, though not enough. I find RX or SpectraLayers much easier on the eyes. Pretty tedious to do though in PluginDoctor. Try 5khz and slowly slide the frequency up and down and you'll see the foldback. Aliasing gets louder and more pervasive at higher frequencies. When I push it a little (mic +35), the fundamental is at ~-6dB, harmonics starts at ~-20dB, the highest partial below Nyquist is ~-55dB, and the aliasing level is well below ~-85dB. I've owned these plugs for awhile (UAD2 cards), but I've rarely used them because I saw little point in using up DSP just for the 1073 eq curves, which I can get from the MK1 too.
Yet, the La-2a collection for example anti-aliases perfectly, as do many other, so this is likely not the main reason. The fact that the filter is set at 30k most likely has something to do with it, since all partials which would land between Nyquist and 30k will fold back as aliasing. The only way to know if it suits you is to try it, or maybe find some works that are known to have been produced on UA hardware and see if you like that.Thanks for the link, but I already had a look. These kinds of tests are fun to do because it shows the complexity of the plugins, but ultimately it comes down to "how does it sound?". Also note that some of the hardware that UA models has aliasing in the actual hardware, so that will show in the plugins as well. Note that the filter only cuts above 30kHz, so if you are pushing up to 24kHz in your sine wave test you are going to see some aliasing. It talks about the anti-aliasing filter, and lists the plugins that have it and those that don't.
